STAC Report: RMDS with Chelsio TOE-Enabled 10GigE and Red Hat Real-time
Highest P2PS output to date from a two-socket server: 12.6 million updates per second
In a previous STAC Report, a solution consisting of Chelsio 10GigE NICs, Red Hat Enterprise MRG Realtime, Intel processors, IBM HS21 Bladecenter servers, and Blade Network Technology (BNT) switches demonstrated record low latency and very high throughput with the Reuters Market Data System (RMDS). In that test, the Chelsio NIC's TCP Offload Engine (TOE) was disabled. So Chelsio asked STAC to run the same test on a system in which TOE was enabled. Chelsio believed that its TOE would significantly improve throughput and latency. Chelsio also asked STAC to apply the latest known optimizations for the overall environment, to demonstrate the system’s full potential.
First, we performed the standard RMDS latency tests. Second, we examined the maximum P2PS Producer 50/50 throughput in a multiplexed configuration.
Some of the key results were:
- Less than 0.9 milliseconds of mean latency at up to 750,000 updates per second.
- Enabling the TOE and applying the latest system optimizations reduced mean latency by up to 287 microseconds.
- Standard deviation of latency remained below 0.5 milliseconds at up to 700,000 updates per second.
- Highest throughput reported to date in the “Producer 50/50” fanout test for a two-socket server:
o 12.63 million updates per second
o The optimized TOE configuration had 127% higher throughput than the previously tested non–TOE configuration
